“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth…”
What do you see today? Your problems magnified by your doubts of a solution? Your heartache multiplied by your bad decisions? A loneliness compounded by your unwillingness to allow anyone to get close enough to listen? For many people the only thing they see today is darkness. They have no hope, no comfort, no joy. The circumstances of life have weighted them down and left them despondent at best, utterly defeated at worst.
We make a mistake when we look at our present situation and allow it to determine our outlook on our future. Sometimes though, that is the only option we see. One punch after the other knocks out our vision. One devastating heartbreak after another that convinces us that this is just our lot in life. A brighter future is only for fairy tales and movies. That is just not meant for me. I wish I could tell you that as a believer in Jesus Christ we would find an end to all of this life’s pain and struggle. We do not. What we do find is an unseen and unending power to overcome any and all problems that may come our way. Unfortunately, I must inform you that you will feel the pain of it all. There is no numbing, no anesthesia. There is no way to avoid trouble in this life and the pain that comes with it. There is, however, a way to defeat it.
Our problems have a way of making us declare a dreadful future for ourselves. We fail, fall or find trouble on our doorstep and we begin to believe the lie that the enemy tells us; this is how it is always going to be. Why is it that we are so prone to freak out and throw in the towel on our future? It is because satan wants to keep us from the most powerful of all weapons; faith. It can move mountains of hurt and fear. It cannot make the trouble disappear, but it can make us able to see that this trouble won’t last forever. Even if we found ourselves in awful tribulation all of our life, that does not have any bearing on our eternity. There will come a day when this life we live and this world we live it in will be no more. We will live forever, not bound by this world’s limitations but free from all of it’s hardships and strife. It should be too good to be true, but it most certainly is true.
Listen to the words of John the in Revelation 21:1-7 (NIV)
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,“ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.
I saw. John saw what many cannot. A new heaven, a new earth. A new way of life. A future without pain and trouble. God allowed him to see the wonderful hope that Jesus said we would have. God wanted him to report to us that it is true and faithful. He saw the promise made in both the Old and New Testament. He saw the wonderful production of God’s amazing grace. Eternity with God, eternity without satan. Eternal joy without end.
Stop allowing the enemy to tell you that this world is all we have to look forward to. You are putting way too much stock in this temporary world. This life is only a vapor. When we put our faith in Christ we become citizens of heaven. This world is not our home. We are just passing through. And we will pass, He already has done it for us. He rose from the dead to go and prepare a place for us. He will take us there. He will make all thing new. It is as sure as the past. Solid as can be, unshaken. When you see His face and enter eternity with Him, all the pain of this life will be forgotten. Every tear will be wiped away forever. Death will be a defeated and destroyed foe, never to be seen or felt again. So when trouble knocks at your door and tries to tell you that things will never change, tell it that they already have. Endure it knowing that this life of pain and trouble won't last forever. But the life of no pain and no trouble that Jesus offers us will.
2 Corinthians 4:17,18 (KJV)
17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; 18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
